THE GUIDE

DNA Based Vampires

About The Book:

In the Guide, you meet a different breed of vampire. It's a world in which becoming a vampire isn't a matter of being bitten, of a demonic encounter or some curse buried in myth and lost lore, but a matter of your genetic code, your DNA.

In this world, there is a society where vampire humans and non-vampire humans work together to guide the whole of mankind into an understanding and acceptance of one another. Most non-vampires don't know of the vampires peaceful coexistence. Of course, not all vampires are members of the Guide and share the Guide's views and values. The newest member of the Guide, Eddie Laidlaw, is about to find that out.

It was almost a struggle of wills more than strength. Eddie could only think of one thing; can't breathe, can't breathe. This single focused thought shifted. It was joined by a second thought. Someone had told him once, he couldn't remember who, "Eddie, you're a Vampire. You can do without air for a very long time." He remembered the conversation. He remembered Rachel and smiled at his opponent. Eddie found new strength in the thought and applied it. Neck bones snapped like old twigs.

The Follower's eyes bulged and Eddie grinned, pushing the man against the wall. He abandoned his grip on Eddie's throat, which might enable him to tear Eddie's hand from his own throat. He held out thirty or forty seconds longer, then Eddie closed his grip even more.

Eddie released the Follower when he was certain the man would be no more trouble to him. Turning to the last Follower nursing his broken arm, he smashed his fist against the man's head as he looked up at him. Blood-covered and in pain, Eddie turned to the Priest looking at him with his one good eye. "Come on, Priest, time to move before we have to go through this again." Eddie grabbed a dishtowel from the kitchen before heading for the door. He had to take the Priest in tow.

Walter was in shock, and Eddie understood that.

Eddie remembered all too well the night that the Followers of Delvar attacked the Island. He remembered the horrible fighting he saw and how he did not understand then. He had been in this man's position, then, and Rachel had seen to him. It was his turn. "Is there a back door out of this place?" Eddie asked, leading the way to the stairway.
